CHENNAI: An eight-month-old boy from Maduravoyal died in a city hospital on Sunday night following complications of dengue. Public health officials suspect dengue to be the reason for the death of another child, a six-year-old girl from Mogappair, at Institute of Child Health, Egmore on Monday.
Public health authorities said they initiated vector control measures. “We have been receiving cases of dengue from these neighbourhoods in the past few weeks. There has been a spike in fever cases, including dengue, from across the city. Most of the patients have recovered without complications,” said a senior official. In 2019, more than 2,000 cases of dengue were reported from across Tamil Nadu.
Doctors at Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital said eight-month-old Lohith from Maduravayol came to the hospital “very sick”. His liver and kidneys failed, causing death. “Despite intensive therapy including continuous renal replacement therapy, he did not respond. On Sunday night, we saw his pupils dilate, probably because of a bleed in the brain or stroke,” said intensivist Dr Bala Ramachandran.

A few hours later, six-year-old Meenakshi from Mogappair who was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Government Institute of Child Health on Sunday with fever and pneumonia died. “We suspected dengue. We have sent her blood samples for tests,” said hospital director Dr K Jayachandran.
On Monday, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami held a meeting with officials of the health and local administration departments.
