Man arrested in Pune with ivory worth Rs 80.10 lakh

PUNE: Four elephant tusks, worth Rs80.10 lakh, were seized from a 50-year-old man at Swargate on Saturday evening.
The suspect was identified as Bhima Brogriya Mudawat alias Chavan (50), who resides in Hadapsar. He is a native of Telangana. The police have seized the ivory and two cellphones from his possession.
Police constables Mohsin Shaikh and Yashwant Khandare of crime branch received a tip-off about the ivory. The police then alerted the state forest officials about the same.
The police and forest officials laid a trap at Swargate. The suspect was allegedly walking along Shankarseth Road after alighting a bus when police nabbed him.

Police suspect that Chavan brought the ivory from some South Indian state and came to Pune in search of buyers. Every piece of the seized ivory has been carved with intricate designs, police said.
A team, led by deputy commissioner of police (Crime), arrested the suspect.
