MADURAI: A third year diploma mechanical engineering student at a private college near
Srivaikuntam in
Tuticorin district of
Tamil Nadu was hacked to death by a gang on Monday.
The murdered has been identified as Abimanyu alias Dileep, 19,
Police said that the
murder was over a rivalry between two groups belonging to the same –Pallar – community in Santhaiyur village.
The youth studying in St Xavier’s Polytechnic College in Seydunganallur was heading home for lunch when he was murdered. Preliminary inquiry revealed that a gang of seven that came on two-wheelers waylaid him and hacked him on his neck and head, leaving him dead on the spot.
Superintendent of Police Arun Balagopalan who visited the spot said that the murder was over previous enmity and that the victim was an accused in an attempt to murder case in May this year. “We strongly suspect the hand of two brothers -- Anandharaj and Kumar -- over the clash they had with the victim over a temple festival,” he said.
Police sources said that clashes erupted between the two groups over organising the local temple festival in Uykaatu Sudalai temple in Santhaiyur village near Seithunganallur earlier this year. Abimanyu and his father Tamilselvan questioned the organisers over the financial details for the event.
This did not go well with one of the organisers Chappani and there was exchange of blows between the two groups. Abimanyu attacked Chappani’s son Kumar, 35, with a knife and police registered a case against Abimanyu and a few others for attempt to murder. The SP said that the incident took place on May 5, 2019.
“Abimanyu surrendered, was lodged in jail under judicial custody for a month and released on bail. We filed the chargesheet in the case. Meanwhile, the teenager was attacked by the opposite party. We have formed three special teams – each under an inspector – and they are working under the deputy superintendent of police of Srivaikuntam,” Arun said.
