Pregnant woman dies after car falls into canal

HYDERABAD: A nine-month pregnant woman and her mother-in-law died when the car they were travelling in fell in the Sagar canal in Khammam on Sunday evening. Doctors tried to save the baby by performing a surgery on the dead mother, but they failed.
The accident occurred at Gollagudem village on the outskirts of Khammam town. Police said P Mahipal Reddy, the husband of the pregnant woman and an assistant engineer at Transco in Mahbubabad, was driving the Tata Indica car from Khammam to their home in Maripeda.
“Reddy’s wife, Swati, 28, was nine-month pregnant. On Sunday morning, Reddy his wife and mother, Indira, went to a hospital in Khammam for Swati’s medical check-up. When they were returning home, Reddy who was suffering from dysentery, tried to pull over the car close to Sagar canal bank, so that he could attend nature’s call. The car accidentally slipped into the canal when Reddy was trying to pull over,” said Khammam rural SI A Venkat Rao.
A woman who was washing clothes in the canal and two men nearby flung a saree at Reddy, who was trying to come out of the car.

“Reddy held on to the saree and he was pulled out of the water. The two women in the back seat drowned. With the help of locals, we took out the bodies from the water and shifted them to a hospital in Khammam. Doctors performed a surgery on Swati in an attempt to save the baby, but the child was stillborn,” the SI said.
Police have booked a case under Section 304-A of the IPC. After post-mortem, the bodies will be handed over to Reddy on Monday.
