District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao has mooted the idea of posting a nodal officer in every government office in the district to interact with differently-abled people approaching the offices.
Speaking at an awareness seminar on ‘Sign language and society’ organised by the Social Justice Department in association with the All Kerala Association of the Deaf in Kozhikode on Monday, Mr. Rao acknowledged the difficulty facing hearing-impaired people as most officials were not familiar with sign language. He said they had been denied their rights and hence would make arrangements to train nodal officers in sign language.
Social Justice Officer Sheeba Mumtaz, chief executive officer of Sign Next Theertha Nirmal and sign language expert D.S. Vinayachandran spoke on the occasion.
