Ludhiana: Former Punjab minister and senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia visited the bereaved family of farm scientist Khem Singh Gill on Sunday.
Majithia remained with the family members for some time and offered his condolences to the family.
Recalling the contribution of the former vice-chancellor of Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana, Majithia said Gill had made immense contribution to Green Revolution, especially in breeding new strains of wheat, linseed and sesame.
Majithia said: “Gill was awarded with the Padma Bhushan Award. He was an imminent philanthropist. He was the vice-president of the Kalgidhar Trust and Kaligdhar Society, Baru Sahib, which is the largest Sikh charity. He was the professor of Sikhism and occupied prestigious Sant Teja Singh Chair at the Eternal Global University. His contribution to agriculture and his pioneer role in making Punjab the “food basket” of India will always be remembered by SAD as the party always stood for the agrarian society in the state. Sardar Parkash Singh Badal had immense respect for Khem Gill and feels that a huge vacuum has been created by his sad demise,” said Majithia.
Khem Gill was the founding fellow of the World Academy of Sciences and was rewarded with the coveted Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize, which is a team award of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), FICCI Award, ICAR Golden Jubilee Award and Silver Jubilee Award from the Indian Society of Oilseeds Research. He had written a number of books and scores of scientific papers in the field of agriculture.
