The price of onions in the city has increased by 125% due to a fall in supply following severe floods in Maharashtra, which is a major supplier to the district.
As of Sunday, the price of onions across all the Rythu Bazaars here touched ₹45 per kg as opposed to its usual selling price of ₹20, compelling people to restrict their purchases.
“The price of onions has been rising for weeks now. Since it is a main ingredient in our food, we have no choice but to purchase it, thereby cutting down on other vegetables,” said Ravi Kumar, a resident of Balaji Nagar.
Officials at the Agricultural Marketing Department said that the supply of onions would not improve until the situation in Maharashtra subsides.
“The city alone has a requirement of 100 quintal onions every day while the district receives 250 to 300 quintal on a daily basis. Now, the supply has fallen down to 200 quintal per day due to the floods in Maharashtra,” said Murali Krishna, Assistant Director, Agricultural Marketing Department.
