Legendary F1 Designer Adrian Newey To Head Veloce Extreme E Team

Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey had decided to utilize his huge expertise at the top open-wheel form on motorsport in another field and is set to head a team in the new Extreme E off-roading championship.

BBC Sport reports that Newey, who currently holds the position of Red Bull Racing’s chief technical officer, will act as the Veloce team’s ‘lead visionary’. One of the outfit’s other founders is two-time Formula E champion and former F1 driver Jean-Eric Vergne.

Extreme E is a new series founded by Formula E chairman Alejandro Agag. He hopes the championship will highlight climate change in the desert, the Arctic, the rainforests, the Himalayas and an island in the Indian Ocean, where championship events will be held.

The Veloce team is associated with the Veloce Esports organization and has also named Adrian Newey’s son Harrison as one of its five co-founders.

“For me, it was clear I had to be involved since I first saw the concept,” Jean-Eric Vergne said. “Together with my other co-founders, we have worked incredibly hard to make this happen. We plan to be disruptive in our approach as we drive awareness of climate change.”

Extreme E is set to kick off with a race in Greenland in 2021. WRC ace Sebastien Ogier has been named as am ambassador for the championship and could even participate in some (if not all) races. Other drivers associated with the championship include Andreas Bakkerud, Timo Schneider, Lucas di Grassi and Andre Lotterer. The inaugural winner of the W Series, 21-year-old Brit Jamie Chadwick, will also compete in Extreme E.
