  • The discarded item was given a new lease of life with black paint and wallpaper

A mum-of-one with a passion for DIY is a firm believer in the saying: one person's trash is another's treasure.

Carmen Blanch, from Gloucester, New South Wales, loves nothing better than furnishing her home with an array of items she has decorated herself.

Her most recent piece, an old chest of drawers that was being given away for free, now looks every inch a designer item - thanks to some black paint and wallpaper from Bunnings.

As well as taking to Facebook and Instagram to share before and after snaps, Carmen also outlined her step-by-step process and listed every item she used.

The chest of drawers was advertised for free online.

However, the only stipulation was it needed to be collected.

While others might be put off by the size and weight, Carmen - who had to pick up the piece on her own - said 'where there's a will, there's a way'.

Once home, she set about removing the unsightly remains of packing tape with a hairdryer and a paint scraper.

The heat from the hairdryer warmed the tape adhesive while the scraper allowed her to remove it without damaging the wood.

What items did Carmen use to transform the dresser?

* Wallpaper from Bunnings

* Hairdryer to remove packing tape

* Tape Measure

* Scissors

* Plastic Scraper

* Steel Scraper

* Brush for painting, second for glue

* Clean rags

* PVA Glue

* Wattyl water-based  paint

* Sandpaper P80 grit

* Screwdriver

Next, she gave the dresser a light sanding using P80 grade sandpaper to ensure the paint she planned to use would properly stick.

Between sanding, Carmen wiped the unit down using a damp, clean cloth.

When the chest of drawers was ready to be painted, a water-based paint, leftover from a previous renovation job, was used.

She layered on two coats, leaving 24 hours between each to allow the paint enough time to completely dry.

Day three of the makeover saw her remove the drawer handles using a screwdriver before measuring the drawers from top to bottom and cutting the wallpaper to size.

The wallpaper was cut a further three times because each drawer needed to covered separately.

Working from the top down, Carmen covered the first drawer with PVA glue, then fixed the correct section of wallpaper in place.

This step was repeated until every drawer was covered, all the while taking extra care to ensure each piece lined up perfectly.

'You have to work out spacings first before sticking it there as once you got wallpaper attached it is very hard to move around.' Carmen said on the post.
