Udhagamandalam: A sum of Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned by the commissioner of municipal administration to make the Kodappamund channel in Ooty, a closed one to prevent the mixing of sewage in the channel. The channel has now become a dumping site for merchants, residents and tourists. The open channel which runs about 3.5 km from Upper Kodappamund through Ooty town and ends at Ooty Lake is now filled with plastic bottles, garbage and sewage, despite frequent cleaning exercise carried out by volunteers. According to activists, the channel also has weeds and requires desilting.
“This is the reason the Nilgiris collector took initiative and got funds sanctioned to make the channel a closed one”, Ooty municipal commissioner P Narayanan said. tnn
