Sydney commuters can now use credit and debit cards to catch buses and trains instead of tapping on with their Opal cards.

NSW Transport made the announcement on Monday after introducing tap-and-go with credit and debit cards on trains last year.

Adult commuters using their credit cards will receive the same benefits as Opal users, including half price fares after eight journeys and capped fares.

Pensioners and students will still need to use Opal cards to get their benefits.  

Public transport users can opt between their Mastercard, Visa, American Express.

They can also use their mobile wallet on their smartwatch, smartphone or tablet to tap on and tap off.  

Buses were the last to get contactless payment as trains, Metro, light rail and ferries already had the capability. 

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said it was great that all public transport were up to speed.

'This achievement marks the final piece of the contactless payments puzzle,' Mr Constance said. 

He said the move marks a significant milestone for the country's transport innovation. 

The news comes as the Bondi Link service celebrates its first birthday and an incredible 8.7 million passengers.
