Tata Motors might be best known for its infamous Nano, but the company is embracing electric vehicles by announcing plans for a range of “aspirational” EVs.

Little is known about them, but the first will arrive in the fourth quarter of the 2020 financial year and use so-called “Ziptron” technology. The company didn’t say much about the upcoming powertrain, but promised it will provide zippy performance, long range, a fast charging capability and a battery pack that features an eight year warranty.

More importantly, electric vehicles equipped with the powertrain will be affordable. The company didn’t mention pricing, but said parts commonality and economies of scale will help to make the new technology affordable for Indian consumers.

Tata Motors CEO Guenter Butschek added the powertrain was developed in-house and will deliver a “thrilling driving experience.” He went on to say Ziptron technology has already racked up 1 million kilometers (621,371 miles) of testing and this has proven the system is “advanced and reliable.”

That isn’t much to go on, but the teaser images suggest the powertrain features a small T-shaped battery pack. It sends power to a “highly efficient” electric motor that promises to provide “superior performance.”

The automaker also said models equipped with Ziptron technology will come with a regenerative braking system. Last but not least, the company promised the powertrain will offer the best dust and water protection in the industry.

A lot of details remain unclear, but Butschek said their upcoming vehicles will “usher in a new wave of eMobility in India.” To help kick start this process, Tata has released a couple of promotional videos which highlight the environmental and performance benefits of EVs.
