GURUGRAM: The long-awaited spell of rain on Saturday plunged many areas of the city into darkness. Power supply to DLF 1, 2 and 3, Sushant Lok, and sectors 23, 27 and 46, among other areas, has been intermittently disrupted because of the rain for over a day.
“Every time it rains, there is a power outage. There have been power cuts for more than 12 hours since yesterday,” said Jatin Verma, a resident of Sushant Lok 1.
The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) said it was trying to fix things as soon as possible. “We shut power supply to areas that are accident-prone. We restored power after 6.30pm in some areas on Saturday. Later, we saw seven transformers had stopped working. In many areas, wires had been damaged. We continued the repair work late into the night and restored power in almost all areas in the city. Our engineers are still working on minor faults. All major problems have been fixed,” a senior DHBVN official said.
Residents, however, said the discom did not do enough. “The DHBVN complaint number did not work late in the evening. We had to stay out in the society park at 2am after the power backup failed,” Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of DLF 3, said.
“Three to four hours of power cuts has become a norm. After it rained this time, the DHVBN maintenance team could not locate the fault. The entire area went with no power for more than five hours,” said Bhawani Shankar Tripathy, general secretary of the Sector 23A RWA.

Besides, when power supply was restored on Sunday morning, the voltage was low.
“When voltage is low, we can barely get anything to run, but the backup doesn’t work either. We could not even get the water pumps going. These things are not new. We have been complaining about electricity issues for the past five years, but nothing has changed,” said Sonia Kapur, a resident of Sector 46.
