Symbol of communal harmony, Kolkata's Khidderpore Durga Puja is in danger

KOLKATA: Muslim members of Five Star Club in Khidderpore's Munshigunj in Kolkata are a worried lot.
The puja committee of the club - which has been organising Durga Puja for the past seven decades - could not get even half the amount of donations as compared to the last year's budget.
The puja committee members are worried because of the financial troubles. They are afraid that if the situation prevails, they won't be able to organise Durga Puja even next year.
The West Bengal government has also provided Rs 25,000 which is not enough. "We can ask for donations from political leaders, but do not want to associate them with the puja," said committee treasurer Abdul Alim.

Committee member Bikash Roy said, "Since Hindu families in this area are in minority, Muslim youths have been organising Durga Puja every year. This puja represents Bengal's long history of multiculturalism and tolerance between the communities. It should be saved."
