HISAR: A joint team of Hansi police and chief minister’s flying squad arrested a Punjab-based youth from Chandigarh for allegedly demanding a BJP leader Rs 11 lakh to insure assembly ticket from Hansi.
The accused, identified as Gaurav of Amritsar, who disguised himself as a prominent election campaign strategist, had also threatened the complainant of ruining his political career if he didn’t pay the money.
DSP Rohtash Kumar said a case has been registered on the complaint of Hansi-based BJP leader Rajesh Thakral against Gaurav under sections 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the IPC.
Thakral stated in his complaint that the impersonator had called him and claimed to have helped formed governments with his strategy in Gujarat and Bihar elections, and was now surveying Haryana. Following this, the accused said he would show Thakral to be leading in his survey, improving his winning chances, and demanded Rs 11 lakh for the purpose. The BJP leader said Gaurav also threatened to spoil his career if he failed to pay him.

The DSP said acting on the complaint, a joint team of city police and CM flying squad went to Chandigarh and arrested Gaurav based on the complainant and his son Nauny Thakral’s description.
Police are interrogating the accused to learn if he had cheated other leaders too.
