CHENNAI: Byelections to Nanguneri and Vikravandi assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Kamaraj Nagar assembly segment in Puducherry will be held on October 21, the Election Commission of India announced on Saturday. Results will be declared on October 24, said chief election commissioner Sunil Arora in New Delhi.

Nominations will begin on September 23 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 3. Model code of conduct has already come into effect in all the three segments. Tamil Nadu had just completed a mini-general election as bypolls were held for 22 assembly segments with the Lok Sabha polls.
Soon after the Election Commission announced the schedule, the DMK and the Congress came to an understanding under which the DMK will contest from Vikravandi and Congress from Nanguneri. The bypolls were necessitated as Nanguneri MLA H Vasanthkumar resigned after getting elected as MP from Kanyakumari LS constituency and Vikravandi MLA K Rathamani of the DMK died in June.
Both the parties have invited applications from aspirants. DMK president M K Stalin said the party would announce its Vikravandi candidate on September 24. AIADMK has also invited applications from the aspirants for the two seats.

Hectic lobbying over the last few weeks forced the DMK to give Nanguneri seat to the Congress.
Earlier, there was a chorus for Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin to contest from Nanguneri. “We have arrived at an arrangement on the two constituencies after senior Congress leaders had discussions with the DMK. Congress candidates will contest in Nanguneri and Kamaraj Nagar constituencies,” said Stalin. It was a direct fight between the AIADMK and the DMK in all the 22 seats that went to the bypolls along with the LS elections. While the ruling party could retain only nine seats, the DMK managed to win 13 seats.
