JAIPUR: In a bid to curb accidents by the state roadways buses, the transport department has asked the drivers to keep a photograph of their families on the dashboard of the vehicle when they drive. Officials claim that this will serve as a reminder to the driver to remain cautious while driving. The employees union, though, states that the order invades the employees’ privacy and is not practical.
Although the order went s going viral on social media, transport minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas stated that it is still unclear as to how the order came into being and said, “All orders have to be approved by me but in this case, I will check on who issued this order as it was not cleared by me. On Monday, I will clarify the issue.” The drivers of vehicles associated with state transport department will have to put a postcard size coloured photograph of themselves with their family members on the dashboard. The message is contained in an order issued on September 6 by the transport department under "Humein Hain Intezar" (We are waiting) scheme".
An official of the state road transport cooperation told TOI, “The order is essentially to remind the drivers that their rash driving could result in accidents and they too have a family waiting for them at home. The image of their families in front of their eyes will hopefully ensure that they follow all traffic rules and do not over-speed. We are just trying various ways to prevent road accidents especially those in which state roadways buses are involved.
However, the employees claim that they had no knowledge of this order till it was reported in media and stated that neither was it legal nor could be forced.

M L Yadav, state president, Rajasthan State Roadways Employees’ Union said, “This order is not practical at all as the drivers are not permanent to the buses and keep changing. How does the department expect the drivers to carry their photograph on everyone and stick it on the dashboard? Also this is a clear invasion of privacy as why should it be expected that the driver displays his photograph in front of passengers who he does not even know?”
Claiming that no prior knowledge of this order, Yadav added, “The drivers are just supposed to follow the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and in that this new order is not mentioned so it cannot be imposed on anyone.”
