Bypolls will sound death knell for BJP in Karnataka: Congress MLC

MANGALURU: Calendar of events announced by the Election Commission of India to 15 assembly constituencies in Karnataka has also set the clock ticking for the fall of the BJP government in the state, said Ivan D’Souza, MLC and KPCC spokesperson. BJP, that touts itself as a party of discipline has to scan ‘family trees’ of 15 disqualified MLAs to field candidates for these constituencies even as Congress is ready with its list, he noted.
Addressing reporters on Sunday, Ivan said the BJP finds itself in a piquant situation as while it is under fire on one side from 15 disqualified MLAs who are concerned about their political future, chief minister BS Yediyurappa finds himself isolated in the swirl of developments. The Supreme Court is unlikely to intervene at this stage, he noted.
On the reported meeting of Yediyurappa with advocate general and the disqualified MLAs at the forest guest house in Bengaluru on Saturday, Ivan questioned propriety of this meeting as the code of conduct is already in force. The Congress is sure of winning all the 15-seats in the bypolls, Ivan said, adding that the electorate will teach the MLAs who betrayed their respective parties a lesson.
On parting of ways with its coalition partner – Janata Dal (Secular) with which the Congress had formed a coalition government under D Kumaraswamy, Ivan said the JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda had made it clear that two parties will go on their own in the polls.

“We (Congress) do not need anyone to fight the polls and the organisational machinery and rank and file of the party is all geared for the elections on its own steam,” Ivan asserted.
Referring to party’s move to hold a protest rally and day-long dharna in Belagavi on Tuesday against the state government’s failure to address issues faced by flood-affected people in the state, Ivan warned that party cadre will ‘gherao’ any union minister who comes to Karnataka to protest their failure to secure flood relief funds for the state. Ivan slammed the apathetic attitude of the centre towards the plight of flood-hit people.
