Coimbatore: A private liquor factory situated amidst the farmlands at Mavuthampathy village near Pudhupadhi in Madukkarai panchayat is polluting underground water and soil by discharging effluents into the ground,
said farmers from the region,
who filed a petition to the collector on Saturday.
“The factory, which has been functioning for about four years, has been discharging effluents into ground. The impact could be seen in the nearby farmlands for about eight acres,” said S Sathish Kumar, a farmer.
The factory is just 100 meters away from the forest boundary, he said. “Not just the colour of underground water, but also the colour of soil where water is spread regularly has turned black. Due to the foul odour of the water, even cattle do not drink it. Coconut and banana plants have withered,” Kumar said. “The factory management claimed that they are treating effluent before letting it out, but we don’t know if that is true.”
“A couple of days ago, effluents from the factory overflowed and entered into the farmland. Since then, it has become extremely difficult even to pass through the farmland because of foul odour. Though we informed the factory management, they have not responded,” he said.
Officials of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), along with officials from the Madukkari tahsildar office, inspected the village and collected samples.
