MANGALURU: The words ‘your lock of hair is beautiful akka’, coming from a young cancer patient, inspired a law student to donate the same.
The simple gesture of caring towards cancer-affected people was made by
Pavithra Sheitye, a first-year student of
SDM Law College, Mangaluru.
Speaking about the donation, the 19-year-old law student and a native of Kolhapur (
Maharashtra) said, “A fortnight ago, I visited a hospital as I was having fever. When I was awaiting my turn to consult a doctor, a small girl suffering from cancer was sitting next to me. Caressing my hair, she said ‘your lock of hair is beautiful akka’. These words of compliment set me into thinking how this 5-6 year-old child would be suffering and unhappy at not having hair due to treatment (
chemotherapy).”
“Though I could not converse much with that girl, I understood how painful it was for a girl to live without locks of hair,” Pavithra told TOI.
After returning from the hospital, Pavithra decided to donate her hair for cancer victims. After informing her parents, Pavithra got in touch with a woman who was in the know about such donations. “After donating my hair, I felt gratified over doing my bit for the cause. I may do the same in future as this would bring a smile to cancer patients. The smile is more beautiful than (my) hair,” said Pavithra.
In the past too, many girl students from city have donated their hair for the cause.
