Assam police on Friday recorded the statements of the three women who were allegedly stripped and tortured at the Burha police outpost on September 9.
The three women were sent for a second round of medical checkup at
Mangaldoi civil hospital. This was after the medical officer of the Hengalpara primary health centre, where the three women had gone for an initial checkup on Thursday, said that there were fresh wounds on the body of the women. The medical practitioner recorded his statement on Thursday before the high-level probe team.
Deputy inspector general (DIG) central western range (CWR), Brajenjit Singha, who has been investigating the entire incident, told TOI, "The statements of the victims were being recorded."
The statements of the staff of the Burha police outpost were recorded on Thursday. Sources said that one of them has informed the probe team that the three sisters were beaten up inside the police outpost by the accused woman constable Binita Boro.
Boro has already suspended been suspended.
Meanwhile, the woman who was allegedly abducted by the brother of the trio lodged a complaint with Sipajhar Police in Darrang. Sources in Darrang police said that in her complaint, the woman has alleged that she was abducted and also the sisters had taken away her jewellery.
On September 8, a pregnant woman and her two sisters were allegedly stripped and tortured by the cops inside a police outpost in
Darrang district after they were taken there for questioning in connection with a kidnapping case in which their brother was the accused. One of the women, who was pregnant, claimed that she had to terminate her pregnancy due to the injury she received at the police outpost. All three of them are residents of Guwahati.
National Human Rights Commission and the Assam Human Rights Commission have registered two separate cases against the alleged torture of three women. Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports, NHRC said that the incident raised serious issue of violation of human rights. Accordingly, NHRC issued notices to the chief secretary and the DGP of the state asking them to formulate detailed report within four weeks.
