Review: \'Newcomer\' by Keigo Higashino

'Newcomer' is the latest book by Keigo Higashino. Titled 'Shinzanmono' in Japanese, this edition has been translated by Giles Murray.
'Newcomer' is a part of the Police Detective Kaga series. The charming detective has been transferred to a new precinct- Nihonbashi and is attempting to solve the murder of a woman who lives alone and was strangled to death in her apartment. He interviews many suspects and all seem to have a motive for murder or a good alibi or both. His thoughtful observations and way of connecting with those he interacts with are always fascinating to read.

The tale is a cleverly told one. The book is divided into sections all of which tell the tale of different people who get dragged into the investigation. The story is character-driven and we get a glimpse of many different people and how they live in Tokyo, from the victim's estranged son, who is an actor to the owners of a clock shop. The insight into the culture of the city is enthralling, we see how Tokyo mixes tradition with modernity and how different generations approach the situation in their own way. The story isn't fast-paced or a thriller, though it is as gripping. It's a good book to enjoy over a weekend.
