PATIALA: Three inmates reportedly attacked another prisoner with rods at the maximum security Nabha jail. The accused have been booked by the police after the injured inmate was hospitalized with serious injuries. However, the jail authorities have claimed that only two inmates were involved in the clash that broke after the prisoners quarreled. The injured prisoner received blunt injuries in the attack and he was rushed to government hospital in Nabha after being given first aid inside the jail premises.
According to the police the incident allegedly took place on Monday evening when one Gursharan Singh alias Sharni had an argument with Karamjit Singh alias Kammi. After both of them started to quarrel, inmates supporting Gursharan jumped into the fray and attacked Karamjit. The police have initiated a probe into the matter after registering a case against the accused. The cops said Karamjit was rushed to the hospital after he received blunt injuries. The police revealed that a cross-case would be registered after the statement of Gursharanjit was recorded.
“We have registered a case against Gursharanjit Singh, Jagroop Singh, and Jagjit Singh on the complaint of Karamjit Singh. A cross-case will be registered after Gursharanjit’s statement is recorded,” said the station house officer of Nabha Kotwali police station.
Nabha DSP AS Thind said, “Gursharanjit is a gangster and has been lodged in the jail from the last few months. A probe is underway to look for the reasons behind the attack.”
Meanwhile, Karamjit has alleged that initially an altercation had ensued between two inmates over drug money and he had intervened to stop the fight, but when one of the accused slapped him, he retaliated.

Speaking to media from the hospital, Karamjit said, “Gursharanjit got into a fight with some inmates over money for smack that he had supplied to them. He was asking of the remaining Rs 4 lakh out of Rs 8 lakh for the smack supplied. I intervened to stop the fight, but they attacked me also. The accused then snatched a wooden rod from a security guard and hit me on the head.” He added that mobile usage was rampant in the jail and the authorities do not raise an objection against the influential gangsters.
Ramandeep Singh Bhangu, superintendent at Nabha jail, has refuted Karamjit’s claims. He said, “Gursharanjit is booked for murder and was lodged in the jail since the last few months. Both Gursharanjit and Karamjit started an altercation over some matter between them outside the jail. Following this, Gursharanjit and his accomplices attacked Karamjit.”
