COIMBATORE: For the first time in the city, police have invoked several Indian Penal Code sections against a group of motorcycle thieves as well as the people, who bought the stolen vehicles from them.
Police have arrested as many as 10 people and recovered nine stolen motorcycles from them. They were identified as A Abubacker Siddiq, 19, of North Housing Unit at Selvapuram, S Azaruddin, 22, of North Housing Unit, M Jaffar, 32, of Athupalam, A Abbas, 40 and N Sahul Hammed, 42, hailing from Karumbukkadai, G Pandiarajan, 22, of Ganapathy, P Subramanian, 31, of
Pudukkottai, R Palanivel, 21, of
Rathinapuri and R Ajith, 19, of Selvapuram.
The Saibaba Colony (crime) police had arrested Siddiq after he snatched a mobile phone from S Sakthimurugan of Jaya Nagar at Onapalayam on Saturday night when he was on Thadagam Road – Dr Ambedkar Road junction. Preliminary inquiry revealed that Siddiq was involved in several motorcycle thefts along with his accomplices. Based on the statement given by Siddiq, police arrested several people.
All of them were booked under sections 392 (robbery), 379 (theft), 120 (B0 (criminal conspiracy), 34 ( acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment ), 411 ( dishonestly receiving stolen property) and 414 (assisting in concealment of stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code. They were remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the
Coimbatore Central Prison.
“Usually, motorcycles thieves are arrested under Section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code. For the first time in the city, those who bought the vehicles were also arrested,” a police officer said.TNN
