Government of India can consider providing funds to private institutions that have been granted Institutions of Eminence (IoE) status for boosting research, said G. Viswanathan, chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology, on Tuesday.

Addressing the media on VIT’s future plans, in the backdrop of it becoming one of the ten private educational institutions in the country to receive the IoE status, he said the focus on research and innovation, expected by the government, required considerable financial resources.

He was responding to a question on the ten government-run institutions chosen for IoE status being provided a funding of ₹1,000 crore each, over a period of five years. “We may also approach the government in the future to seek funding for research,” he said. He thanked the government for placing its faith in VIT.
