Job fair for distance learners sees three-fold rise in participation

Second fair by Pondicherry varsity sees more than 200 students register for event

The second job fair held by Pondicherry University for distance learners has recorded a three-fold increase in participants over the first event.

In a first, the university reached out to alumni of its Directorate of Distance Education and as a result, more than 200 students registered from all over the country for the job fair. According to a press note from the university, while the first job fair held in July was confined to all the final year students of 2017-18 batch only, the second event extended opportunity to the entire alumni of DDE irrespective of their degree of study.

Overall, 210 DDE students registered for the job fair, out of which, 120 students participated, which is a three-fold increase over the maiden event.

About nine companies including Eureka Forbes Ltd., LIC of India, SEA Movement and Star Health Allied Insurance participated.

Of the shortlisted 60 candidates, 13 were selected and offer letters will be sent to them this week. The salary range offered by these companies varies from 2-6 lakh per annum. The job titles offered to them include sales executives, insurance advisors, CSR consultant, social entrepreneurs, sales coordinators and Admin HR executives.

In an invited talk, R.P. Lal, former bureaucrat advised candidates on prepping for varies types of interviews.

S. Agilani, Director RSETI, Indian Bank, spoke about requirements of skills development for self-employment in today’s context. Simply having a university degree will not help students in getting a job without having the required skills, he noted.

S. Loganathan, Counsellor, Indian Bank, spoke on the importance of financial management and that the RBI had made it mandatory to teach students about it. Due to inadequate financial literacy, frauds were taking place in the banking sectors, he added. Nandakumar Manavalan, Vice-President, Ma Foi Education and Consultation Services, Chennai, gave a low down on preparing an impressive resume and the way it has to be presented to meet the requirements of employers.

Rajiv Jain, University Director (C&CR), also addressed the candidates.

According to the university, the DDE job fairs were conducted with an aim to provide talented students available in the university in the field of management and other disciplines to the industry. As a response to the huge demand for job fairs among distance education students, the DDE plans to conduct more job fairs in its twinning programme centres in the north, east and western parts of the country.
