Beneficiaries to receive ragi under PDS in Mysuru

MYSURU: Thousands of Anna Bhagya (BPL) cardholders in the Old Mysore region will now receive ragi (finger millet), along with rice, under the public distribution system. The department of food and civil supplies has decided to introduce ragi after a gap of one year in all the districts of the region.
Millet will be distributed starting this month, till stock is available. "Finger millet will be distributed based on availability. The quantity will differ from one district to another. For example, in a few districts, one kg of ragi will be distributed along with 6kg of rice, while it will be 4kg ragi and 3kg rice in some districts. Ragi has been added to the PDS as the government recently procured it from growers," said an officer from the department.

"There is huge demand for ragi in southern districts of Mysuru. It will be distributed through Antyodaya Anna Yojana cards also," he added.
P Shivanna, deputy director, department of food and civil supplies, said ragi distribution started through fair price shops after it was procured from farmers. "Last year too we started distributing during the same time . In Mysuru, 4kg of rice and 3kg of ragi will be distributed per person," he said. In Chikkamagaluru and Hassan, the distribution pattern will be same , said PP Savita, deputy di rector, department of food and civil supplies, Hassan.
