The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has recorded 1,197 mm rainfall this month, which is the highest the city has received in September in the past 15 years.
The NMMC had started recording rainfall in 2005 and since then, this year has received the highest rainfall. The total rainfall recorded this year as of Tuesday evening is 4,873 mm, crossing the 3,347.28 mm received in 2013.
The highest rainfall received in September till date was the 683.40 mm recorded in 2005. “If it rains in a similar way the whole month, it might cross the 5,000-mm mark as well. When the monsoon began late this year, it was suspected that the rainfall might be very less. But it has become the highest in last 15 years,” an official from the NMMC’s disaster management cell said. In 2018, only 83.15 mm rain was received in September, in 2017 the figure was 499.98 mm, 470.65 mm in 2016, 167.33 mm in 2015, and 349.61 mm in 2014.
Morbe dam has started overflowing with the current level at 87.75 metres. The dam’s gates were opened on Saturday. “This year, the dam has overflowed many times and the gates had to be kept open continuously,” the officer said. This year, June recorded 817.85 mm rain, July received 1,571.48 mm, and 802.78 mm was recorded in August.
