The JJ Marg police on Tuesday arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 50-year-old woman within four hours of her body being found.
According to the police, the woman was found on the Babul Tank Road in Dongri in a severely injured condition around 8.40 a.m. on Tuesday, and the information was relayed by the control room to JJ Marg police, who rushed to the spot.
The woman was rushed to the JJ Hospital, where she was declared dead before admission, and based on the injuries visible on her head, the police registered an offence of murder under the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons.
“We formed five teams and tasked them with viewing CCTV camera footage of the entire area. After examination of a lot of footage, our team spotted the deceased with an unidentified man, who were caught on camera walking next to each other in Dongri,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Sangramsinh Nishandar said.
The team noticed that the man walked with a peculiar limp and decided to use this as a potential clue.
“Senior police inspector Sanjeev Bhole and his team made inquiries with local informants. Some of them indicated that the accused might be a local resident named Asgar Ali (33), based on the limp. The accused was then traced and arrested,” Mr. Nishandar said.
He said according to investigations so far, the deceased woman, who is yet to be identified, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and got into an argument with Mr. Ali, which escalated quickly.
“In the heat of the moment, Mr. Ali ended up hitting the woman on the head with a loose paver block from the pavement, causing her death,” Mr. Bhole said.
Efforts are under way to identify the victim.
