KEVADIYA (NARMADA DISTRICT): Prime Minister
Narendra Modi celebrated his 69th birthday in his home state by participating in a gala event organized to mark the Sardar Sarovar dam’s water level touching 138.68 m, the highest since its completion in 2017.
Addressing a public rally after taking a round of various tourist facilities, Modi said that the Statue of Unity (
SoU) has put Kevadiya Colony on the global tourism map, which is evident from the massive surge in tourist influx at the world’s tallest statue.
“In just 11 months since its inauguration, SoU has seen 23 lakh tourists from the country and other parts of the world. Despite being 133-years-old, the Statue of Liberty is visited by an average of 10,000 persons daily. SoU gets nearly 8,000 tourists daily and a record number of 34,000 tourists came on the Janmashtami day.,” Modi told a cheering crowd.
Emphasizing that sustainable development along with environment protection was the need of the hour, Modi also urged people to ensure that SoU and the surrounding facilities are kept free from plastic at a time when the government has launched a campaign to ban single-use plastic.
“Kevadiya is a shining example of eco-friendly development. On one side there is the
dam and power generation equipment and on the other, there are beautiful eco-tourism sites around SoU,” he said.
Referring to the dam reservoir reaching its full level, Modi said Sardar Patel’s dream has come true after decades. “There was a time when water reaching the height of 122 m was considered as a big achievement. But within five years, the water level has touched 138 m. This is phenomenal,” he said.
He said the new tourist facilities like eco-tourism site, nursery, butterfly garden and others will generate employment opportunities for the locals who would get big market for their vegetables, fruits and milk.
Earlier, he performed puja of
Narmada River and the famous Dutt Temple in Garudeshwar.
