KOLKATA: An auto driver, who found a purse that a woman had forgotten in the vehicle on Sunday, tracked down her husband’s contact from her Metro Cash and Carry membership card and handed the bag—all its contents, including cash and multiple cards, intact—to him on Monday.
Moumita Saha (36), immunization coordinator at Institute of Child Health in Park Circus, accidentally dropped the purse in the auto being driven by Amit Saha (37) on the Jadavpur-Mukundapur route on Sunday morning, when she was on her way to hospital for an emergency meeting. She had boarded the auto from near Santoshpur Jorabridge, alighted at the EM Bypass crossing and hopped on to a Park Circus-bound bus. “The bus had reached Ruby crossing that I realised I did not have my the purse on me. It had around Rs 3,500 in cash and a number of cards. I suspected a pickpocket had stolen it. I called up my friends and husband, Lincoln, who instructed me to get down at the Science City crossing and lodge a police complaint. I filed a complaint but did not hope to get it back,” Moumita said.
But on Monday afternoon, she was in for a pleasant surprise when her husband called her up to say an auto driver had just returned him the purse.

The other auto drivers at Amit’s stand said he did not even own the three-wheeler but had a big heart. On finding the purse, Amit did everything to get the owner’s contact, they said. “There were no visiting card or any other document from which I could get the owner’s contact or address,” said Amit. “I found a Metro Cash and Carry card. A colleague and I took it to the store and asked the manager for the details. The manager connected us to the woman’s husband, whose details they had. I asked him to come to our stand and handed him the bag,” said Amit. “I don’t think I have done anything big. I just did my duty as an honest citizen.”
But for Moumita, Amit is nothing short of a hero: “I can’t believe such people still exist. For me he, is a hero and I am happy our city still has such honest people.”
