KALYAN: An alleged history-sheeter wanted in many states has been arrested from Wasind in Thane district. The accused, Mukesh Menon (54), had run his car over a cop in Kalyan last month and fled, leaving the cop grievously injured. Menon and his gang members cheated people stepping out of banks, often by diverting their attention.

"He had changed his looks and was hiding in a building," said a police officer. The police learnt of his presence in the building, said deputy commissioner of police Vivek Pansare. A team of cops from the anti-robbery squad disguised themselves and mingled with locals before they nabbed him. An officer said that Menon had dodged them for around 10 hours before they zeroed in on him. Menon, said the officer, is part of gang a whose members masquerade as policemen and most groomed themselves in such a way to lend credence to the assumed police identity. "They kept long moustaches, like cops typically do," said the officer.
Menon's aide Abbas Ukhani is wanted, said assistant police inspector Avinash Palde.
