Unable to the take the 'insults' his tuition teacher hurled at his mother as they argued over money, an 11-year-old stabbed her to death on Tuesday morning in Govandi.

Ayesha Aslam Hisuyae had been home-tutoring the child for a few years, and was at the family's place for one such class, teaching other children too. She was good friends with the mother, so much so that the latter asked to borrow some money from her after the children left. The incident took place at around 8 am.

Ayesha refused to lend the amount and the discussion spiralled into an argument. The child said his mother continued to be polite, even as Ayesha began "misbehaving". The child went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed Ayesha in the back and abdomen until the 30-year-old keeled over and lay in a pool of her own blood. Neighbours alerted the police, who detained the juvenile.

"Prima Facie," said DCP (Zone VI) Shashi Kumar Neena, "the motive behind the murder is a heated argument over money. The child is being questioned further. We are not ruling anything out as of now." A case under IPC Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

According to National Crime Record Bureau's (NCRB) report, Mumbai stands at second spot with regard to crimes committed by juveniles. According to NCRB's 2017 report, Maharashtra registered a total of 6,606 cases of juvenile crime.
