5 fresh on-screen Bollywood couples to watch out for in 2019

2019 has been the year of new Bollywood pairings, and we’re not getting done anytime soon. From Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Dulquer Salmaan in The Zoya Factor to Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon in Panipat, there’s a lot of fresh chemistry coming your way before December ends

It’s always good to see a well-loved, on-screen couple back together in a new film. Fans get excited when Shah Rukh Khan pairs up with Kajol, like when he did with Dilwale (2015), or when Akshay Kumar does a film with Katrina Kaif, like with Rohit Shetty’s upcoming feature, Suryavanshi. But there’s a different thrill in watching two actors come together on the silver screen for the very first time—after all, it can be the beginning of an iconic pairing that dominates many films and lasts for years. In 2019 alone, filmmakers introduced audiences to a number of fresh on-screen couples—such as Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in Gully Boy, and Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in Kabir Singh—and watched their gambles pay off on the box office as well. But the year is not over yet, and nor is Bollywood’s list of new on-screen couples. Scroll ahead for the five you can forward to this year.

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Dulquer Salmaan in The Zoya Factor (releasing September 20, 2019)

The Bollywood actor and the South superstar will be seen together for the first time in The Zoya Factor, an upcoming film based on Anuja Chauhan’s book by the same name. If their chemistry during the film promotions is anything to go by, The Zoya Factor is bound to be a hit. Kapoor Ahuja’s spontaneous and often bold statements are a study in contrast with Salmaan’s shorter, more thought-out responses. Here’s hoping the off-screen magic continues on-screen as well.

Karan Deol and Sahher Bambba in Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (releasing September 20, 2019)

Just like his father, Sunny Deol (who debuted in Betaab in 1983), Karan Deol is also starting his career with a love story. And just like his father, Karan, too, seems like someone who shies away from too much media attention. We didn’t get a whiff about his prep before the promotions for his debut film began. And his co-star in the film, Sahher Bambba, is even more low-profile. A newcomer herself, the young actor hails from Shimla and was the winner of a talent contest held in Mumbai, where she was studying. Bambba was selected after several auditions for her debut role opposite Karan. The verdict for the film might still be far away, but these newcomers are certainly being looked at with interest.

Tara Sutaria and Sidharth Malhotra in Marjaavaan (releasing November 22, 2019)

Ever since the Student Of The Year 2 actor told Karan Johar that she likes one of his former ‘students’ on his chat show, there have been talks of Sutaria dating Sidharth Malhotra, her Marjaavaan co-star. The fact that they are neighbours in real life only added fuel to the fire. But as expected, the two actors have denied any truth to the link-up rumours, with Sutaria stating that she found it ‘cute’ that people were talking about them. Although the rumours refuse to die down completely, with some claiming that the couple want to keep their relationship low-key, there’s no denying that they make for one good-looking couple. All we need to see now is if the chemistry spills over on-screen as well.

Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi in Dil Bechara (releasing November 29, 2019)

Sushant Singh Rajput has been around for a couple of years, and his co-star in the upcoming 2019 feature, Dil Bechara, isn’t exactly new to showbiz as well. At the age of 14, the Delhi girl made her debut in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (2011), playing younger sister to Nargis Fakhri. A couple of brand commercials and appearances in films such as Hindi Medium (2017) and Fukrey Returns (2017) later, Sanjana Sanghi managed to bag her first project as a protagonist in this Mukesh Chhabra-directorial. In the first look of the film, Rajput and Sanghi can be seen standing dreamily against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, and already there’s the promise of romance.

Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon in Panipat (Releasing December 06, 2019)

When the shooting schedule for the Ashutosh Gowariker’s Panipat wrapped up in June, Kriti Sanon took to her Instagram to thank co-star Arjun Kapoor for “being such a lovely and entertaining co-star”. Though Kapoor and Sanon have both been in the industry for a while now, they hadn’t done a project together till this film, a period drama based on the third battle of Panipat. The first look for the movie isn’t out yet, so we can’t say how they will look together for sure. But we do think that this on-screen pair will infuse a freshness to their roles of Parvati Bai and Sadashivrao Bhau.
