Malayalam actor Sathar passes away

Malayalam actor Sathar passed away on Tuesday morning in Aluva. He was 67.

Veteran Malayalam actor Sathar passed away on Tuesday while he was still under medical care. He was 67.

Sathar was, reportedly, suffering from liver-related ailments. He was undergoing treatment for the same at a private hospital in Kochi.

A native of Ernakulam, Sathar made his screen debut with Master Vincent directorial Anavaranam in 1976. He went on to carve a niche for himself in the south Indian film industry by playing negative roles. Some of his popular Malayalam films were Kampolam (1994), Revenge (1985), Black Mail (1985), Beena (1978) and Agni Parvatham (1979), to name a few.

Sathar also established himself as a character artiste through a slew of roles in Tamil films such as Mayil and Soundaryame Varuga Varuga. He also worked in Telugu films.

After being active in the industry for over three decades, Sathar took a small break from acting after the 2008 film Roudram, which had superstar Mammootty in the lead role. Following a four-year sabbatical, he made a comeback with 2012 Malayalam hit 22 Female Kottayam. In a career spanning over four decades, he has acted more than 300 films in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.

In 1979, Sathar married Malayalam actress Jayabharathi, with whom he had shared screen space in a slew of films, including Beena, Adimakachavadam and Sundarimaarude Swapnangal among more. However, the couple separated later. They have a son, Krish J Sathar. Actor Krish made his debut in acclaimed director Siddique’s Mohanlal-starrer Ladies and Gentleman.

Sathar’s funeral will be held on Tuesday at Padinjare Juma Masjid, Kodungallur.
