JAIPUR: In yet another incident that shows the danger posed by stray dogs, an eight-year-old boy succumbed to injuries after being attacked by strays while undergoing treatment at the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics (ITO) of SMS Hospital on Monday.
He was fatally attacked near his residence in Radha Nikunj Colony in Mansarovar area on last Friday. Incidentally, this was the second such attack on the child by strays in the area.
“The boy had sustained serious injuries to his face and neck in the stray
dog attack, leading to the rupture of his jugular veins. The doctors performed surgery on Friday night itself to repair the damaged veins, but he died today,” said Dr D S Meena, medical superintendent, SMS Hospital.
On Monday afternoon, when his attendants gave him water, he died of aspiration, hospital authorities claimed.
Boy was given four units of bloodThe boy was first taken to the emergency unit of SMS Hospital on Friday, but as his condition was serious, he was referred to ITO. The doctors at the ITO tried to stop the bleeding from the neck but as it continued, they opted for surgery. Post-surgery, the boy was given four units of blood to compensate for the loss. When the child revived on Monday, he was given water and died of aspiration, authorities said.
This was not the first time the boy has been attacked in the area. Eight months ago, he had survived a similar attack by strays. “At that time, he had suffered injuries on his head,” said Kamlesh Sharma, the boy’s father, a resident of Radha Nikunj Colony on Iscon Road in Mansarovar area.
According to him, the child had stepped out of his house to play with other children when he was set upon by strays.
His father was not at home and his grandfather, Kailash Sharma, a priest at a temple, had rushed the boy to the emergency unit of SMS Hospital along with his mother.
