PUNE: The Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Sunday booked a youth from the Indiranagar area on the charge of raping a 15-year-old girl in her house in Katraj by promising her financial assistance to secure her mother’s release from jail on bail.
The police said the minor girl lodged a complaint against the youth, who was known to her family, after finding out that she was 24-week pregnant.
The girl’s mother was sent to the Yerawada jail in connection with a physical assault case involving her son in March this year. Since then, the girl was staying alone at their house in Katraj.
“The girl’s brother has been absconding since then,” an officer said.
The police said the suspect allegedly took advantage of the girl’s situation and offered her financial help to ensure that her mother got a bail. After the girl agreed to his offer, the youth visited the minor at her house in March and raped her, the complaint stated.
The incident came to light after the girl shared the ordeal with her mother following her release from the jail a few days ago, the police said. The woman took her daughter to the Sassoon General Hospital for medical tests.

The girl decided to register a complaint with the police after the medical reports confirmed that she was pregnant. The police said investigation was under way.
