PATNA: RJD, the party founded by Lalu Prasad, appears to be divided over the issue of embracing chief minister
Nitish Kumar.
RJD’s Gaighat MLA Maheshwar Prasad Yadav on Monday sounded the bugle of revolt and said majority of his party legislators were in favour of inviting the JD(U) president to the
Mahagathbandhan fold.
The Gaighat MLA also alleged that leader of opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was in league with Union minister and BJP’s Hindutva mascot Giriraj Singh to dislodge Nitish.
“Both Tejashwi and Giriraj are conspiring against Nitish. I have talked to many RJD MLAs and majority of them are ready to back Nitish if BJP attacks or unseat him. Tejashwi’s opposition to Nitish is well known, but we are not ready to meet the same fate as in the recent Lok Sabha elections,” Maheshwar told TOI.
When asked about the fate of Mahagahbandhan in Bihar, the RJD MLA said it is dead. “Why should Nitish come to the Mahagathbandhan. Rather, we should extend him our
support in case of BJP ditching him,” he said and added that senior party leaders like national vice-president Raghuvansh Prasad Singh “share the same view”.
Incidentally, Raghuvansh has also said all non-BJP parties should come together to defeat the saffron party in the assembly election. “If Nitish comes to this side, BJP’s strength will be diminished. Also, regional parties in Bihar should merge to provide a strong platform against BJP. If Nitish walks out of NDA, all non-BJP parties should welcome him,” Raghuvansh told TOI on Monday.
He, however, dismissed Maheshwar’s statement saying he has been hobnobbing with Nitish for the past two years and may contest on a JD(U) ticket.
The remarks coming of RJD assume significance in the light of the contradictory statements by some BJP leaders on who would be NDA’s face in the Bihar assembly elections due in November-December next year. Though deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi has openly backed Nitish as “the captain of NDA in Bihar for 2020 assembly polls”, former state BJP president C P Thakur and party’s state vice-president Mithilesh Tewari have said the CM face would be decided after the elections.
Tejashwi, on the other hand, has openly opposed Nitish and said there is no chance of his entry in the Mahagathbandhan.
“Has Nitish applied for it (joining Mahagathbandhan)? It’s a ‘non-political and immature stand’ by Tejashwi, who is surrounded by sycophants. They convince him that if Nitish joins the Mahagathbandhan, he will be the natural leader of the alliance and Tejashwi won’t become the CM. What is the problem if Nitish joins us? Tejashwi should keep options open to defeat BJP,” said a senior RJD leader.
He also blamed Tejashwi for the drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls saying, “political miscalculations” of the leader of opposition drew RJD a blank in the Lok Sabha elections.
