KOLKATA: A man died after falling from the Garia-bound ramp of Maa flyover on Sunday afternoon, much to the shock of the locals and motorists who were passing by the Science City crossing at that time.
The incident occurred around 3.40pm. Sajad Murmu (39), a resident of Balaspur Kusmandi area of Dakshin Dinajpur, apparently walked onto the Garia-bound flank of the flyover without anybody noticing him. Prima facie, he walked a little over hundred metres on the ramp before falling from the flyover. He fell on the ground at the Science City intersection, a few meters from the Pragati Maidan police station as other vehicles were passing by.
“I was keeping an eye on the traffic movement when I saw the man falling from the flyover. It took a few seconds for me to overcome the shock and realise what happened,” said a traffic sergeant who was on duty at the spot.
The Garia-bound vehicles from Science City were stopped immediately for a few minutes as an ambulance was rushed to take the man to a hospital off Bypass. He was declared brought dead at the hospital.
“The man suffered internal hemorrhage and injuries as there was no blood on his body. Only, some water was oozing out of his mouth,” said an on duty traffic sergeant.
Police later found his identity. Prima facie police suspect Murmu had come to the city in search of work and may have been in a distressed state of mind. Further probe is on to find out if it was an accident or suicide, said police.
