CHANDIGARH: The excise and taxation department of the UT administration has cancelled goods and services tax identification numbers of 100 dealers or companies found missing from their registered workplace.
The move comes after the dealers failed to respond to the notices and were found to be bogus. The department has initiated the process to check their liabilities, bank accounts and properties. On papers, all these dealers have an annual financial turnover of over Rs 50 lakh.
“We had found 132 suspected dealers in our exercise around a month back. Notices were sent to all of them. But only 32 dealers explained in detail why they were not functioning from the addresses given. Most of them claimed they had shifted from their workplace and had not changed their addresses on the record,” said a senior official of the UT administration.

Source said the process has started to assess and check their financial credentials. “We are checking their liabilities, back accounts, properties, last filed tax return and other details related to their financial dealings, so that penalty amount can be prepared and recovered in the coming days,” sources said.
Around a month back, the department had collected details of 500 dealers randomly for conducting the check. During the check, the department had found that 132 dealers were not existing at the locations or places registered with the department.
