BENGALURU: An online survey initiated by residents living in localities lined on either side of Kanakapura Road has shown that while more than 84% of commuters to the
Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) currently take cabs, more than 90% are willing to take Volvo buses, if the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) services are extended till Gubbalala or Yelachenahalli.
Currently, airport-bound Volvo services are available up to Banashankari TTMC on Kanakapura Road.
More than 650 respondents participated in the online survey so far. Residents of the area, who have long been demanding bus connectivity to the airport, initiated the survey in order to show the BMTC that there is a high demand from commuters for bus services to Kanakapura Road.
“The survey says 84 % of them take cabs and 99 % confirmed that they will take Volvo buses if services are extended. We’ve thousands of commuters travelling from here to the airport, Hebbal and other stops,” said Lakshmi Bala, who was part of the group of residents who initiated the online survey.
Bala urged the BMTC to look at extending airport Volvo services to the Kanakapura Road areas.
Several residents told TOI that Kanakapura Road has not only been recently upgraded into a national highway, but is also dotted by several upscale residential enclaves on its either side beyond Talaghattapura. The road also leads to Roerich Estate and Art of Living’s sprawling campus that draws people from various parts of the world.
“Many people are finding it difficult and Kanakapura Road is in need of airport bus services. The BMTC KIAS 5 should be extended till NICE Road junction. This will not only help people, but also improve revenue for the BMTC, which should look into this route on priority,” said VK Srivatsa, a commuter. He said the BMTC had earlier said there is not much ridership between
Kanakpura Road and the KIA.
A BMTC official, in charge of operations promised to look into the commercial viability of extending the Volvo services on the route. “The suburban rail link to the KIA and completion of the airport metro line will improve connectivity. Currently we’re operating Volvo services between Banashankari TTMC to the airport and commuters can use this route instead.”
