Kolkata: 2,500 prosecuted in night-long drive against traffic violations, other crimes

KOLKATA: Night-long block raids on Saturday that lasted till early of Sunday, especially around clubs, hookah bars and restaurants, led to arrests or prosecutions of over 2,500 people for either carrying out crimes or being involved in major traffic violations.
The bars that were operating till late or breaking Excise rules, were raided. “There were complaints against certain places. In addition, we wanted to bring down the number of pending warrants by carrying out arrests, an annual exercise before the Pujas,” said an officer at Lalbazar.

According to police, the drive was conducted all over the Kolkata Police jurisdiction between 9pm on Saturday and 1am on Sunday.
During the raid, cops under the supervision of senior officers like divisional commissioners, assistant commissioners and officers in charge of various police stations, detective department and traffic department barged into criminal dens based on intelligence input and set up naka posts across the city to nab offenders.
“It is a sustained but impromptu drive, which will be taken up often. Nabbing some of the known criminals as preventive arrest is also a part of the drive,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
During the surprise raids, police also scanned shady hotels, night clubs and some illegal liquor dens.

The raids yet again established the need for the campaign against bikers. As many as 876 were pulled up for not wearing helmets. Another 599 were issued challans for carrying three on bike.
Also, 197 were found to be involved in reckless and drunk driving.
