Missing woman’s body found in Lonavla valley

A team of Shivdurga Mitra volunteers retrieved the body from a 300 ft deep valley at Lion’s Point near Lonavla
PUNE: The body of a 24-year-old woman software engineer reported missing from Hinjewadi since September 11 was found in a 300ft valley at Lion’s Point near Lonavla about 78km from Pune on Sunday. A team of volunteers from Shivdurga Mitra retrieved it around 5.30pm.
The police have identified her as Aliza Rana from Hyderabad who was working with Infosys at the Rajiv Gandhi Infortech Park in Hinjewadi.
Prima facie, the police suspect it to be case of suicide. They have registered a case of accidental death. “We are not ruling out the other angles. Our investigation is on. We are also establishing how and when she reached Lonavla from Hinjewadi,” Sunil Babar, assistant sub-inspector of the Lonavla Rural police, told TOI.
The woman’s mother had lodged a missing person’s complaint with the Hinjewadi police on September 11 when her daughter did not respond to her calls. The police then launched an elaborate search for the missing woman.
On September 12, some local residents found a handbag near the edge of the valley at Lion’s Point in Lonavla and they alerted the Lonavla rural police.
A police team that arrived looked into the bag’s contents and found a cellphone and an identity card bearing the name Aliza Rana. They called her brother from the spot and informed him about the handbag. They also told him about a search to trace her.
Sunil Gaikwad of Shivdurga Mitra team told TOI that the police had sought their help to locate the missing woman. “We started the search on Thursday and kept looking for three days. On Friday, the team worked throughout the day but we could not locate her. On Saturday, we could not search as it was raining heavily in the valley. On Sunday, our team members Anand Gawde, Chandrakant Gade and Vaishnavi Bhangare spotted the body. We reported it to the police,” he said.
It took them three hours to bring the body up. “It was badly bruised as she may have brushed against several branches of trees before falling down,” he added.
A postmortem will be conducted at Lonavla rural hospital. A Hinjewadi police team is in Lonavla for the formalities.
N R Angaj, sub-inspector of the Hinjewadi police, told TOI that Aliza’s mother, in her complaint, said that her daughter was in Hyderabad till September 10 before returning to Pune where she was staying as a paying guest.

“Her mother told us that on the morning of September 11, Aliza told her that she was going to work but did not reach her office. Her mother called her several times but there was no response,” he added.
When her mother alerted the police, they lodged a missing person’s complaint. “We checked with her room-mates who recorded in their statements that they were not aware about Aliza’s whereabouts. Her mother told us Aliza was a loner,” Angaj said.
