GHMC collects Rs 1 crore fine from litterbugs

HYDERABAD: In four months, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) imposed more than Rs 1 crore in penalties for littering public places. Between May 24 and September 16, Rs 1,03,31,620 penalty was imposed on offenders.

The offenders include IT Parks, commercial establishments, builders and individuals. The maximum penalty amount collected was from Chandanagar circle with Rs 16,90,300 followed by Serilingampally circle with Rs 13,90,200, both of them of located IT corridor. The maximum amount collected is by no means an indication that the IT corridor is ill-maintained but that the enforcement in the area has been taken leaving no stone unturned.
Throwing debris in open, clogging nalas by dumping plastics, throwing leftover jute and sand bags in open, not having silt chambers and letting water drain out on the roads were the most common offences.
