UP: Chambal river flowing above danger mark in Agra, SDRF put on standby

AGRA: With the continuous release of heavy amount of rainwater from Kota barrage, Chambal river is flowing above danger level marking and is likely to set new record of flood level, prompting officials to rope in Provincial Armed Constabulary and their boats. The state disaster relief force has been kept on standby.
According to irrigation department, by 9pm on Monday Chambal river recorded 134.60 meter which is 2.60 meter above the danger mark. It’s important to note, that in 1996 the river recorded 136.70 meter water level in the ravine. With the continuous rising in water level at 10cm per hour, the local authorities believe that Chambal might even cross the 23-year-old record.
Awadesh Sharma, executive engineer of irrigation department said, "At present 18 lakh cusec of water is flowing per second in Chambal river, which has increased the threat of flooding the higher and further land in ravine. We expect the increase in water level of river in next 24 hours also."
Sub-divisional magistrate of Bah, Mahesh Prakash, said, "The local villagers from low lying area have shifted to higher grounds with their cattle. We have also roped in PAC, boats and have kept SDRF on standby in case the situation gets out of hand and immediate help is required."
"The flow of water is so strong that nothing in its path can stand or survive. We will soon set up kitchen to feed local villagers if the water level does not recede. An assessment has been made about the necessary measures to be taken in case water floods upper ground," he added.
Meanwhile scores of villages have been cut off from the main land due to Chambal river flood, affecting nearly 3600 local population. Fortunately, no death or injury has been reported till yet.
