2017 Ford Explorer Recall: Keep Your Hands To Yourself To Avoid Injury

You know you’re about to turn yourself into a contortionist when dropping things between the front seats and center console of most cars. However, in the 2017 Explorer, you could also face some hand injuries due to the sharp edges of the seat frames.

Ford is aware of 311 reports of injuries attributed to this issue. Therefore, it has announced a recall for select SUVs equipped with electrically adjustable front seats, which were built at Chicago between February 13, 2016, and October 25, 2017.

Ford estimates that there are a total of 338,332 vehicles affected by this safety campaign: 311,907 in the United States and federalized territories, 23,380 in Canada and 3,045 in Mexico.

“Affected vehicles are equipped with power seats and may have seat frames with sharp edges”, the automaker explained in a release issued a few days ago. “Customers could come in contact with the sharp edges when reaching between the power front seat and center console, presenting the risk of injury.”

After scheduling an appointment with an authorized dealer, technicians “will install flocked tape to the exposed edge and tab on the inboard side of the power seat frames”, Ford said. Until then, owners are advised to avoid contact with the seat frame edge.

According to the NHTSA, the recall is expected to begin on October 14. Owners of said vehicles with any questions they may have on the topic can reach out to the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or Ford’s customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
