CHENNAI: To reduce wastage of water during transportation through tankers, Metrowater has set up smart card-based water dispensers.
At present Metrowater has set up 20 such dispensers in three filling stations in the city on a trial basis. Nine dispensers have been fixed in
Kilpauk Water Works, eight in Nungambakkam filling station and three in
Injambakkam filling point. The Injambakkam filling point was the first one to get the automated dispenser, which was fitted there about a month ago. The dispensers at Kilpauk Water Works are the latest addition, said a senior officer.
In the existing system, water is filled in a tanker by operating the pump manually. Majority of the tankers will have space to fill at least 1,000 litres more than their actual capacities. For example, a tanker with 6,000-litre capacity can carry 7,000 litres of water. The excess water get wasted as spillover during transportation. With the absence of any mechanism to check the quantity of water filled, the tankers used to fill to their brim. In order to reduce the spillage, the automated dispensers have been set up, the officer said.
Tanker operators have been issued radio frequency activated identity cards to use the dispensers. When the card is shown in the dispenser water will be released and once it reaches the carrying capacity of the tanker, a buffer of 50 litres will be added, the officer said.
