Brisk arrivals of tomatoes have led to a dip in price in the city.

In the wholesale market, one kg of tomato was quoted at ₹10 on Saturday. It was ₹13 in Uzhavar Sandhai and ₹15 in retail market.

A month ago, one kg of tomato was being sold between ₹45-50 in the retail shops at Gandhi Market.

In most of the grocery shops it was being sold between ₹50 and ₹60 a kg in most of the grocery shops.

The downward trend in price of tomato began during the first week of September and now it has plummeted to ₹10 a kg in the wholesale market. Traders attribute the price dip to heavy arrivals.

Besides arrival from Oddachathiram, Pollachi and Dindigul, the Tiruchi market receives supply from Thuvarankurichi and Vaiyampatti too.

Traders say that the Tiruchi market is receiving about 15 loads of tomato a day and chances are bright that this would increase further. If it happens, the price may dip further in the next few weeks.
