MUMBAI: A 28-year-old man from
Sangli who holds a bachelor's degree in science was arrested on Saturday in connection with the recent seizure of 131 kg of meow meow-a banned narcotic drug also known as mephedrone or MD-valued around Rs 52.5 crore. The accused, Sardar Patil, has been arrested by the anti-terrorism squad for allegedly manufacturing the drug for the syndicate.
"He has done a B Sc [bachelor's degree in science] and knows about the chemical. He was the one who manufactured the banned drug and the syndicate would then supply it in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai," said a police source.
An officer said they are interrogating Patil to know where and from whom he picked the technique to manufacture the drug and for how long he has been associated with the gang.
The drug used to be manufactured at a laboratory in
Panvel, said the police. On a tip-off, that some people were about to transport the drug last week, the police intercepted them on the Eastern Express Highway. Two people were arrested and they led the police to the laboratory in Panvel.
On September 9, officers of the Anti-Terrorism Squad said they arrested five people and raided a factory in Panvel which was being used as a laboratory to manufacture the drug. At that time, the team had seized 129 kg of the drug besides Rs 1 crore.
The value of the seized drug consignment was Rs 51 crore, said officers. Later, some more quantity of the drug was found.
