NEW DELHI: As many as 10 people may have travelled abroad using the same modus operandi as Jayesh Patel, the 32-year-old from Gujarat caught last week at
IGI airport while trying to fly to New York disguised as an 81-year-old man named Amrik Singh.
Delhi airport police have arrested Shamsher Singh, alias Billu Barber, the man who changed Patel’s appearance and made him look 50 years older. Billu told cops that he had similarly disguised at least 10 other people, including two women.
Patel got unlucky as a CISF jawan noticed that his skin was not wrinkled and he had black hair on his arms. Patel was taken into custody immediately.
Police said, based on the description by Patel, Billu was arrested from his shop in Rohini after an SIT was formed last week. Cops said Billu usually made his clients appear 30-40 years older.
Meet the barber who was ticket to abroad for manyPatel told police that he took the help of agents and a make-up artist who dyed his hair, provided him fake-powered glasses and a turban. The clues led a team head by ACP (IGI) to raid several barber shops in Rohini. Police say Shamsher Singh, also known as Billu Barber in the area, was nabbed on Sunday and cosmetics and other material used to dye the hair of the accused were recovered from the shop.
“The man was interrogated and has so far revealed that he modified the appearances of at least 10 people, including two women. He would charge Rs 20,000 per customer to modify their appearance, generally ‘aging’ them 30-40 years. In the case of Patel, he tried to make him 50 years older,” said Sanjay Bhatia, DCP (IGI) airport.
Police said Singh, 42, studied up to Class X and started working as a barber early in his life. To meet his rising expenses, he also started working as a makeup artist. “He has a small shop in Rohini and after getting caught, he led the team to his shop to show the cosmetics and material he used for dyeing hair and changing the appearances of people,” said Bhatia.
“Based on his descriptions of the people he transformed, we are now trying to track the 10 people who may have flown out of Delhi. We are also trying to track the agents who would bring in clients to him for a change in appearance,” Bhatia added.
On September 8, 2019, Patel was arrested by the Delhi Police after he tried to take a flight to the US on the basis of a fake Indian passport where he impersonated as an 81-year-old man. An FIR was registered under sections 417/2019U/s 420/468/471/120-B of the IPC. Details emerged of him receiving his fake passport just one day after applying, resulting in the police officer who did his verification being suspended. Cops are also keeping a close tab on the passport office.
In a similar case, Gurdip Singh, 68, a resident of Punjab was arrested last Friday after he arrived from Hong Kong with a fake passport which showed his age to be 89 and his name to be Karnail Singh. Police suspect this could be one of the cases related this matter.
“Since 2008, he had been visiting Hong Kong on this fake passport and had also succeeded in getting a Hong Kong ID card,” Sanjay Bhatia, DCP (airport). After detecting this modus operandi, vigilance has been heightened.
